Week Four -Activ8 Camp

WOW!! We had a blast this week!!
Our week was filled with Lizards, Dragons,
Mustaches, and Kitties with mustaches!! What fun!!!

Week 3 -Activ8 Summer Camp

"Sew-For-Myself Camp"

was a huge success!!





The kids did everything. They started by taking measurements,  figuring out their size pattern,

Figured out how much material to use, and how to layout their patterns.  Then they cut out the pattern themselves.


They did all the sewing to make adorable polka dot robes.

Here are the girls modeling their final product...their robes!!

Week Two of Activ8 Summer Camp-

During week 2 of Activ8 Summer Camp the girls made Sports clothes for their American Girl Dolls. They had a blast.

This is the soccer outfit they made. The girls sewed a shirt, shorts, and even socks for their dolls.

NEW MINI-CLASSES

Mini-Classes were designed for an intermediate level or higher sewer that wants to try out different techniques. These are offered as an introduction to many great skills and techniques.

During class the techniques will be demonstrated then the student will sew a sample of the techniques.

Titles will change each semester to offer a wide variety of subjects.

Simple Heirloom Sewing

Those offered this semester are:

• Simple Heirloom Sewing-      Thursday, October 32  from 10 till  Traditionally, the artistry of heirloom Sewing was generally done by painstaking hand sewing. But in this MINI-CLASS, you will learn how to sew many of the beautiful techniques on your sewing machine or serger!. Create a beautiful sampler while learning techniques such as: inserting entredeau and laces into seams, making delicate ruffling, pin tucking, and much more.

• Sewing Sleeves-     Thursday, October 17 from 10 till 1- Putting sleeves into a dress or top doesn't have to be a daunting job. Learn many tricks and tips on how to insert a set-in and a raglan sleeve properly. You will sew a sample of each type sleeve

• Hems-       Monday, November 18 from 6:30 till 9:30  Almost everyone needs to adjust a hem length from time to time. This is a great class to start you in the right direction. Learn how to measure and correctly prepare a hem. You will make samples of several types of hems including how to hem jeans.

• Applique     Wednesday, October 23 from 6:30 till 9:30  Applique is a creative way to embellish any type of garment or home dec item by sewing fabric cut-outs onto another item using decorative stitches. A great example of applique is in children's clothing. Learn the techniques to get you started in this creative way to sew. Sew a sample using several different techniques of applique.

• Beautiful Seam Finishes      Monday, October 7 from 6:30 till 9:30  In this intermediate class, make the insides of your garment just as beautiful as the outside. Serger seams are great but now it is time to learn the "other" ways to finish your seams such as: French seams, flat fell seams, bound seams, Hong Kong seams, and more. Sew samples of each for future reference.

ALTERING READY-TO-WEAR CLOTHES

Tuesday, October 1, 8 ,15, and 22   from 10 till 1


This class is for intermediate to advanced sewers who want to learn how to alter clothing. This class will practically pay for itself as you acquire the skills you need to get an expert fit for yourself and those you sew for.

During the first class I will demonstrate proper alteration techniques for determining how to get the best fit.
Alterations such as taking in and letting out:

• Shoulders
• Sides
• Waists
• Hips
• Sleeves
• and of course, hems

Then learn the best sewing methods of alteration to use to make these changes.

Sewing/ Practice time will be provided to try these techniques on samples or on your own clothing.

Discussions will also include how to make this into a money-making business.

No materials are needed for the first class.

Sewing With Stretch Knit Fabrics

Tuesday, October 29, November 5, 12, and 19   from 10 till 1

 

 

This is an Intermediate level class.

 

Knit fabrics are easy to sew and comfortable to wear. However, you do have to utilize different, but easy sewing techniques to do so.

 

Some of the skills you will be learning in this class will be:

• How to purchase fabric and patterns for knit fabrics
• Choosing the right notions to use
• How to seam many different type seams
• How to sew knits on the serger
• How to finish necklines and hems
• and much more

During this class you will be making a basic T-shirt with ribbed neckline and pants or shorts.

Then we will take the basics a few steps further and learn how to use knits creatively.

 

Bring to the first class:

     your sewing machine and basic notions

     a ball point sewing machine needle-size 10 or 11

 

Requirements for the classes following will be discussed during the first class.

    

 

 

 





Serging

Serging Basics

Thursday, November 21   from 10 till 1

 

 

 

A Serger is a sewers biggest helper. It will never replace a sewing but it makes sewing much faster and better.

However....sergers can look scary... if you have never used one.

 

This class will familiarize you with the basic elements of your own serger, such as: 

 

 How It Works

How To Thread It

Basic Tension

Cleaning

and much more..

 

Bring:

          your 4-thread serger and manual

           4 different colors of thread

           scissors, etc

 

All other supplies will be provided

 





 





 





SERGING II-BEYOND THE BASICS

Wednesday, December 4 AND Thursday, December 5     from 10 till 1

 

So, You have been using your 4-thread serger just to finish seams. It is time to take it to a new level.

Explore new ways to utilize this wonderful machine by learning to:

• use different threads to create different effects
• new stitches and how to balance tension
• new techniques such as rolled hems
• how to apply elastic and lace using your serger,
• applying a zipper
• and making many decorative stitches

Finally get the most of your machine.

 

Bring:

 your 4-thread serger and manual

4 spools of serger thread

basic supplies( scissors, etc)

 

The rest of the supplies will be provided.

Introduction To Reupholstery

Friday, October 4 from 6 till 9 AND Saturday, October 5 from 10 till 6

Bring in your old ottoman, foot stool, or dining room chairs( or small piece of
furniture) that needs to be recovered. Learn the beginnings of reupholstery.
Learn how to strip the old cover off and create wonderful new ones while learning the basics of piping, box cushions, etc, all in one day. Some projects may require additional work at home, depending upon their difficulty, but I will guide you through the process so you leave the classroom knowing how to complete it.

This class begins on Friday evening. We will be stripping your furniture piece and accessing it for materials. We will be going on a field trip to Joann's to purchase materials. We will not have alot of time for shopping so please PRE-shop and decide what you want ahead of time.
If you find your fabric at another store, call me ahead of time and I will help you determine your yardage so you can purchase it beforehand.
If you have a question about whether your project may be appropriate, please notify me.
Then on Saturday, you will do the majority of the work.

Bring:

• Your machine and basic sewing supplies (a zipper foot is necessary),
• A basic tool kit (small hammer, screw drivers, staple gun and staples, pliers), and upholstery
• fabric of your choice.
• Thread -most projects only require regular Dual Duty thread.
• A size 14 or 16 sewing machine needle is suggested.

A digital camera is a great way to keep track of your steps. Bring one if you have one. A pad and pencil will help as well.
Since this is an all day class, make sure you bring a bag lunch , snacks, drinks.

Activ8 Summer Camp 2013-WEEK 1

The first week of Activ8 Summer Camp was great! We had such a good time.


In the morning class the kids made a Back Seat Car Organizer. It has plenty of pockets for all their 'stuff'.

 

 

In the afternoon class, the kids used a technique called Paper-pieced Quilting to make these adorable wall hangings.

Many of the penguins had names before they left class....What Fun!!

My "Mentor-Students"

 Let me introduce you to two amazing young ladies...
This is Catherine and Chloe.

They have been working with me for the whole school year.
They are working on their Senior Project at Columbus High School.
They have chosen SEWING as their project.
Both girls are very talented and turning out to be great sewers.

Wish them both good wishes as they finish up their senior year and head out into the 'big world' with a great skill under their belt....SEWING!!!!!

Columbus seems to be a place where most people wait till the last minute to do anything.. lots of "Last-Minute Marys"
And so it goes with registering for my classes.
Usually 48 hours before a class is to begin, the number of registrations for a class are checked. If a class doesnt have the minimum, it gets cancelled.
Recently I had several classes that were canceled because only 3 people had registered ahead of time. The very next day, one day before the class was to begin, 5 people called or came by to register only to find out that it was cancelled. If those 5 people had registered just a few days before, there would have been 8 happy people in the class. Instead we had 8 unhappy people missing out on the class all together.
...moral of the story...
REGISTER EARLY SO YOU DON"T MISS OUT!!

Sew Much More

Thursday, October 3, 10, 17, and 24   from 6:30 till 9:30

Tuesday, November 12, 19, (Skip for holiday), December 3, and 10   from 6:30 till 9:30

Prerequisite: Ready, Set, Sew
or teacher's OK

Hey Sewers,
Sew, you made it through Ready, Set, Sew. Congrats!!
Now you should be ready to get down to good sewing.
 In this class you
will be learning more about patterns, how to cut, read them, and
understand what you read. You will be making either a pair of fitted
dress pants, or a fitted skirt, or a simple dress.
The pattern suggestions are listed under 'Sew Much More' in the Menu.
You will begin to learn garment construction such as : darts, facings, how to sew a zipper in, and hems.

You should purchase your pattern, fabric, and notions listed on the back of the pattern PRIOR TO CLASS!!. The back of your pattern should show you how much fabric to buy according to your size (not your dress size for Ready-mades but according to your measurements).
Remember to prewash your fabric.
Your pattern may require you to purchase interfacing. Don't purchase it yet. I will tell you all about that in class.
Of course, bring your machine and basic sewing supplies.

Sewing Certificate Program

C.S.U. offers a Certificate Program in Sewing for those who want to take their sewing to the next level. This program offers a wide range of sewing classes that will prepare you for a possible career in sewing, whether it be to start a business of your own doing alterations, custom sewing, or to learn the skills necessary for entrance into a Fashion Design school.

You may also want to earn a Certificate for your own personal accomplishments.

There will be a free Orientation meeting for those interested on Thursday August 22 at 6:30. There is no charge for this class.

If you have taken any of my sewing classes already, those hours may be applied to you totals.

Hi Beginning Sewers,
I am Sue, your instructor. I am looking forward to your joining our class.
I run my class in a very relaxed atmosphere. I want you to enjoy sewing as you learn.
If you don't have fun...it isn't worth it.
You probably have loads of questions about beginning your first class. Hopefully this will answer a few of them:

What do I need to bring to class?
All you need to bring for the first class is, perhaps, a notepad.
EXCEPT if your class runs only for 3 weeks. If that is the case, you Do need to bring your sewing machine to the first class.

During your first class we may take a car-pooled field trip to  Hancock Fabrics to learn about fabrics, notions, and what you will need to buy.

We will discuss everything you will need for the rest of the classes.

A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

What if I don't own my own sewing machine, do you have machines to use?
Yes, CSU has machines to use in class.

Check out my article on "How To Buy A Machine" under A Note From Sue in the Menu.

Can I bring my own machine?
Absolutely! I prefer you learn on your own machine. I suggest that you use a luggage carrier or something with wheels to transport your machine from the parking lot to the classroom. It is a long trip.

...you say, "I had some sewing in high school but it has been a while. Should I start in 'Ready, Set, Sew' or go on to the next level: 'Sew Much More'?"
It is best to start at the beginning...again. Many things have changed with patterns, sizing, machines, etc. A little bit of review would do you more good than harm.

This class is for intermediate to advanced sewers who still feel they need a "Sewing Mentor" at their side for guidance, when needed.

The concept of this class is for you to work on a more individualized basis while advancing your skill levels and techniques.
With my guidance, as your mentor, to give you help and suggestions, you will become more successful and self-sufficient.

In this class you will choose your own project and work at your own pace and skill level.

Bring your machine,basic sewing supplies, and a project of your choice( pattern, prewashed fabric, and notions).

Remember... don't bite off more than you can chew. Choose a project that has a few new techniques in it than your last project. If you get something too complete it will only lead to frustration. If you need guidance in your selection, email me.

This class may be repeated as many times as you like. It is a great way to 'schedule' your sewing time.
